Deforestation in Salta indigenous territories

Overview

Since early August, more than 3,300 hectares of native forest have been cleared in the rural Tartagal area of Salta, Argentina. The deforestation is occurring on the Tonono, Alcoba, and Caraguatá estates, impacting the ancestral territories and livelihoods of ten Wichí indigenous communities.

Greenpeace Argentina has denounced the activity as an “ecocide,” reporting that machinery has approached within meters of homes in the Pozo Nuevo community. Activists argue the destruction is facilitated by a recent reform to Salta’s Native Forest Land Use Planning, which reclassified areas such as Pozo Nuevo and Tonono from “yellow” to “dark yellow,” thereby permitting changes in land use. Critics have cited a lack of transparency from the provincial government regarding authorizations and a failure to respect ancestral territoriality documented by the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI).
