Degradation of Torreón de San Telmo

Overview

The Torreón de San Telmo, a medieval coastal monument in Ubiarco, Cantabria, is undergoing an accelerated process of disappearance due to natural erosion and administrative inaction. Although the structure is protected under Spanish Historical Heritage laws, the association Hispania Nostra included it on its ‘Red List of Heritage’ in 2020.

While the Santillana del Mar City Council commissioned a preliminary restoration project in 2021, the group Ecologistas en Acción has denounced a lack of institutional response. They report that requests made to the Directorate General of Culture and Historical Heritage have not yet resulted in the initiation of necessary files to begin rehabilitation.
