Protests in Delhi have centered on demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, following allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls. Initially, Delhi Police released over 7,000 detainees following unrest, though leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Abhijeet Dipke and Saurav Das, remained in custody. During this period, political tensions escalated as Chief Minister Rekha Gupta accused opposition figures of attempting to turn the city into a ‘battleground.’ By October 11, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das were released from preventive custody. Their release followed an appearance before a Special Executive Magistrate court, where they were ordered to maintain peace and good behavior for one year and furnish a Rs 50,000 surety bond. The detentions had been carried out under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prevent breaches of peace ahead of planned demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The trio had been detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving from Mumbai. Amidst the unrest, which caused significant disruptions to metro and train services, the Supreme Court of India directed authorities to ease movement restrictions and remove unnecessary barricades, noting that the ‘citizens’ right to protest must be balanced with public order.’ Additionally, Delhi Police rejected claims from Dipke’s family that his detention prevented him from attending his grandmother’s funeral, asserting that assistance was offered but declined. Following his release, Dipke criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the party would not be intimidated. Opposition figures allege the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) disproportionately removed approximately 130 million names from electoral lists to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, though the Election Commission and the government have denied all allegations of manipulation. The Congress-led INDIA bloc has since planned marches to the Supreme Court to address these alleged irregularities.
