Protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists have led to significant legal and civil unrest. Initial demonstrations prompted widespread restrictions in the Delhi-NCR region, including the closure of 57 metro stations and limitations on movement affecting approximately 18 million people. As the situation escalated, the Supreme Court of India intervened to review these restrictions and the detention of protesters. Legal challenges have been raised regarding the suspension of mobile internet services and the alleged physical manhandling of legal professionals by police. While some groups, including 124 former IAS and IFS officers, have supported the Election Commission, others—such as alumni from the National Law School of India University—have condemned police actions as ‘arbitrary, illegal, and unconstitutional.’ Following recent hearings, the Supreme Court directed Delhi Police to remove barricades across the capital and restore internet services, emphasizing that metro and rail services must operate normally. The court also addressed the detention of CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Sourav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka; after being taken into custody at the airport on October 10, an Executive Magistrate Court ordered their release following 23 hours in police custody. Recent developments indicate that the Supreme Court is hearing petitions regarding large-scale protests characterized by the slogan ‘Vote Chori,’ which demand the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar following allegations of mass voter deletions. Despite judicial directions to restrain the detention of peaceful protesters, lawyers, and journalists, subsequent petitions allege that illegal detentions have continued in defiance of court orders. The Supreme Court Bar Association has also filed petitions regarding the treatment of legal professionals during the crackdown, which reportedly included now issued formal notices to the detention Election Commission of over 7,000 individuals, India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and opposition leaders regarding these ongoing protests. Opposition leaders, including students Rahul Gandhi and journalists. members of the INDIA alliance, have petitioned the court to investigate alleged mass deletions from voter rolls, requesting an independent audit by an expert committee led by a retired Supreme Court judge.
