In early August 2026, Delhi authorities heightened security ahead of the 80th Independence Day celebrations after the November 2025 Red Fort blast that killed at least 13 people. Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar ordered a drive to verify documentation of used-car dealers, targeting vehicles that might be linked to the attack, while the Red Fort was closed to visitors and surrounded by barricades, scaffolding and temporary tents. Police and other agencies monitored all entry points and individuals with pending Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act cases. A few days later, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation began major escalator repairs at six Yellow Line stations, advising commuters to use lifts until work is finished. The Central Industrial Security Force announced intensified security checks at all Delhi Metro stations from 9 August through 16 August, warning of longer queues and urging passengers to cooperate with security personnel. The screening involves multi-layered frisking, baggage scanners and metal detectors at busy interchanges such as Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate and Central Secretariat, with additional CISF and Delhi Police personnel patrolling platforms and train interiors. Parking at station premises will be closed from the morning of 14 August until 2 p.m. on 15 August. By mid-August, Delhi was placed on high alert. Following directives from the Police Commissioner, the Delhi Police launched intensive late-night security operations. Between 11:00 PM and 2:00 AM, officers conducted thorough vehicle inspections and patrols in multiple districts, including Dwarka Mor, Uttam Nagar, Seelampur, and Moti Nagar. On 13 August, a full dress rehearsal prompted significant traffic diversions. Major roads near the Red Fort, including Netaji Subhash Marg and Chandni Chowk Road, were closed to general traffic, and inter-state bus services between Maharana Pratap ISBT and Sarai Kale Khan ISBT were suspended. As celebrations approach, multi-level security measures have been implemented at the Red Fort.
