Delta Air Lines mid-air Wi-Fi phishing attack

Overview

A Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 flight from Las Vegas to Atlanta was targeted by a mid-air cybersecurity attack involving an ‘evil twin’ Wi-Fi network named ‘Delta WiFi Fast.’ The incident occurred as passengers were returning from the DEF CON cybersecurity convention.

Attackers reportedly used portable hacking tools and deauthentication packets to disconnect passengers from the legitimate aircraft Wi-Fi, redirecting them to fraudulent landing pages designed to steal banking details and personal credentials. In response, the cabin crew disabled the aircraft’s official Wi-Fi for approximately 30 minutes, and pilots used the ACARS system to alert corporate security and ground operations.

Delta Air Lines stated that flight safety was not at risk and aircraft operating systems were not compromised. Following the flight's arrival at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the FBI and airport police intervened to seize wireless transmission equipment and question suspects.
