Nigeria authorities intensify infrastructure crime crackdown

Since late June 2026, Nigerian security forces have intensified a multi‑state campaign against infrastructure crime. Delta State Police seized stolen electric cables and arrested two suspects, while the NSCDC anti‑vandal unit, together with Edo State officials, halted an illegal excavation of an NNPC oil pipeline in Obazagbon, recovering gas cylinders, motorcycles, shovels and digger heads. A magistrate court in Asaba sentenced sixteen men to three years for stealing iron rods and possessing the banned substance Colorado. In mid‑July, Bayelsa State Police arrested suspects for vandalising the newly commissioned Angiama‑Oporoma Bridge and detained three ministry employees over the alleged theft of government equipment worth about ₦500 million. The crackdown expanded to Adamawa State, where the IGP Special Task Force intercepted a bus loaded with 285 stolen pipeline sections and related gear, arresting seven suspects. On 23 July, NSCDC anti‑vandal officers in Gwagwalada, Abuja, arrested six men for puncturing NNPC pipelines and siphoning fuel, seizing motorcycles, firearms and drilling tools. The same day NSCDC detained ten recent secondary‑school graduates in Adamawa for taking part in the banned “Signed Out” celebration, which authorities said caused street fights and property damage. On 31 July, NSCDC units in Jigawa State recovered street‑light cables worth over ₦1.8 million and launched a manhunt after vandals stole a transformer cable from a school, leading to further arrests. In the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police seized stolen drainage covers, solar street lights, high‑voltage electricity and internet cables, and confiscated counterfeit diplomatic and official vehicle plates; five suspects were arrested and the assets are to be returned to the FCT Administration. ~~Police continue to urge public cooperation to protect critical oil, gas, electricity~~ New developments include the June 25 arrest of Osakwe Sunday (28) and ~~transport infrastructure.~~ Ekene Obocha (34) during a raid on the Ibabu‑Ugiliamai Road, where one suspect was injured.
