Denmark expands conscription and deploys to Greenland
Overview
In early August 2026, Denmark enacted a major overhaul of its mandatory military service, extending the duration from four to eleven months. The reform aims to increase the annual intake to 7,500 conscripts by 2033 and includes the first-ever drafting of women, who comprise approximately one-fifth of the new cohort. New training tracks include a drone platoon within the Special Operations Command.
Around 1,600 recruits began the new service on August 3, 2026, undergoing five months of basic training followed by six months of operational service. The government has linked these changes to the war in Ukraine and heightened Arctic security concerns. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s readiness to defend all NATO territory during a summit in Ankara.
As part of the reform, Denmark has begun deploying conscripts to Greenland to assume duties previously held by professional troops. On August 18, the first contingent arrived in Greenland to participate in ‘Arctic Endurance’ maneuvers, including operational tasks in Nuuk. While residents of Greenland and the Faroe Islands remain exempt from service, this initial deployment consists of volunteers. The presence in the strategically vital Arctic territory is intended to bolster the defense of NATO’s northern flank.
