Overview
Denmark has initiated several measures to protect its drinking water and groundwater. Initially, the government allocated approximately 130 million DKK in funding to support various initiatives. This included 86.7 million DKK for protecting strategic extraction areas, 39.3 million DKK from the National PFAS Action Plan to address ‘forever chemicals’, and 3.9 million DKK to help private citizens decommission unused wells that risk polluting groundwater.
Following these funding allocations, the Danish Ministry of Environment launched an eight-week consultation for a legislative proposal to ban pesticide use in vulnerable groundwater-forming areas. The proposed law seeks to transition from voluntary measures to mandatory restrictions, prohibiting commercial pesticide use, the deposition of contaminated soil, and the application of sewage sludge in sensitive zones. Environment Minister Maria Reumert Gjerding characterized the proposal as a “milestone” intended to end decades of insufficient protection.
