Local officials first warned that new EU sorting requirements could force the Mors mussel sector to shut down, threatening jobs, tax revenue and the region’s seafood heritage. The industry’s main operator, Vildsund Blue (also reported as Vilsund Blue), stopped loading while the manual sorting and registration rules were clarified. Within a week the company confirmed production had been halted because an EU sampling plan had not been approved, leaving it to sort shells, sea stars, snails and other organisms from every catch. Director Jan Christensen called the requirement “physically impossible,” sent about 50 employees home and sought a dispensation or an extension. Mayor Jens Dahlgaard and opposition politicians have criticised the rules as a risk to the island’s cultural identity and annual seafood festivals, while Environment Minister Maria Reumert Gjerding defended them as necessary for better monitoring and EU compliance. A 2024 Danish Mussel Committee report had previously promised no extra work for producers. The minister acknowledged there is no quick solution to the sorting dispute. In August 2026 she reiterated that a rapid fix is not forthcoming; a prior government attempt to secure a special exemption from the European Commission had failed, leaving the current rules unchanged. The ministry remains in close dialogue with the Commission to find a solution that meets EU standards. At the same time, Danish authorities reported an unprecedented surge of toxic, spiny‑finned fish (fjæsing) in the Kattegat, with roughly 800 tonnes caught, adding further pressure on the local marine sector.
