Denmark summer fire risk escalates amid heatwave

June 2026 saw high fire-danger alerts ahead of Sankt Hans celebrations, with the Danish Emergency Management Agency flagging high risk in Odense, North and West Jutland and Copenhagen. Public bonfires proceeded under monitoring, though a bonfire in Borre spread to grass on 23 June and strong winds cancelled a planned blaze in Aalborg’s Fjordbyen district. Early July incidents included a summer-house fire in Odder, a playhouse blaze in Herning, an apartment-block fire in Svendborg and a barn fire in Glesborg. On 11 July a shop fire in Sønderborg generated heavy smoke, and a short-circuit in Skive was quickly extinguished. On 16 July fire crews in the Aarhus region dealt with a brief flower-pot fire on Skt. Clemens Bridge, a kitchen fire in Brabrand, a vegetation fire in front of a Brabrand apartment block, and a house fire north of Skals; a volunteer support unit supplied food and hydration to firefighters working in 30 °C heat. August incidents continued the strain on resources, particularly during the harvest season. Early August saw several combine-harvester fires near Kolind, Trustrup, and Breum, as well as a rye-field fire near Kongerslev. Other incidents included a plantation fire near Knebel and a container fire at the Alfa Laval plant in Nakskov. On 8 August, two additional field fires occurred: a baler caught fire in Skanderborg Municipality near Låsby, and a hot catalytic converter from a car ignited stubble in a field near Ringkøbing. By 12 August, fire services continued responding to harvest-related incidents. In Ebeltoft, a blaze on a harvested field reached the edge of a forest. In Midt- and West Jutland, authorities managed three simultaneous incidents, including two field fires in the Ringkøbing-Skjern area and a straw baler fire near Brande.
