Argentina has authorized the deportation of Fernando Farías Laguna, a former Mexican Navy Commander, to Mexico. Farías Laguna has been detained in Buenos Aires since April 23, 2026, after being found with false documentation following an Interpol Red Notice. The Mexican Attorney General's Office (FGR) accuses Farías Laguna of leading a ‘huachicol fiscal’ network, specifically a criminal organization known as the ‘Primos’. This group allegedly engaged in large-scale hydrocarbon smuggling by using false customs declarations to mislabel fuel as lubricants or additives to evade taxes. The network reportedly operated across several Mexican states, including Tamaulipas, Baja California, Colima, Sonora, and Mexico City. The case involves high-ranking military connections, including his brother, Vice Admiral Manuel Roberto Farías Laguna, who is already in custody in Mexico, and his political uncle, former Navy Secretary José Rafael Ojeda Durán. Following a ruling by Argentine Judge Julián Ercolini, who declared a lack of merit to prosecute Farías Laguna for the specific matters investigated within Argentina, the extradition proceedings were dismissed. To facilitate the transfer, the Mexican government formally withdrew its previous extradition request. As of August 20, 2026, the transfer is being executed via a Mexican Navy aircraft. The process is being coordinated by the FGR, the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE), and the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC). Farías Laguna is being returned to Mexico to face charges of organized crime related to hydrocarbon offenses.
