Dermatologists are providing guidance on proper cleansing techniques to prevent skin irritation and protect the skin barrier. In Indonesia, Dr. Hafiza Fathan advises that a “tight or squeaky sensation” after washing is not an indicator of cleanliness and warns that excessive rubbing can damage the skin barrier. For those using exfoliating toners, experts recommend low frequency, patch testing, and nighttime application followed by moisturizer and sunscreen. Specific beginner-friendly options, such as those using low concentrations of Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid, are suggested to avoid harsh peeling. In Mexico, dermatologist Rafael García advises against using harsh sponges or loofahs, suggesting that friction from the palm of the hand is sufficient. This follows findings that friction can modify skin properties, such as the ability to retain water. The American Academy of Dermatology and the Mexican Ministry of Health both recommend using mild cleansers, lukewarm water, and patting the skin dry gently rather than rubbing. Medical experts in the US, Romania, and Moldova are warning against aggressive mechanical scrubs containing abrasive particles like crushed apricot kernels, walnut shells, sugar, or coffee grounds. Clinical dermatology indicates these particles can cause micro-lesions in the epidermis, stripping essential lipids and increasing water loss. To combat extreme dryness, dermatologists recommend applying a thick layer of petroleum jelly or oil-based ointment to damp skin and wearing cotton gloves overnight to lock in moisture.
