China detention of US citizens on espionage
Overview
In early June 2026 Chinese authorities arrested Min Zin, a U.S.-born Burmese scholar, at Kunming airport on suspicion of espionage and endangering national security. The Chinese foreign ministry initially cited the charge before later omitting it from public statements. Washington responded with consular assistance, public condemnation and travel advisories warning Americans of arbitrary detention risks in China.
The Min Zin case was framed by U.S. officials, including members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as part of a broader pattern of China using foreign detentions as diplomatic leverage, heightening bilateral tensions.
Attention then turned to American seismologist Youlin Chen, detained since 5 November 2024 after being intercepted at Beijing Capital International Airport. Chen, a Chinese‑born U.S. citizen, faces espionage charges linked to his research on North Korean nuclear tests—research funded by the U.S. State Department and the Air Force Research Laboratory. He has been held without trial for nearly two years, reportedly interrogated over 100 times, denied adequate medical care, and faces potential life imprisonment or the death penalty.
The U.S. State Department designated Chen “wrongfully detained” in March 2025. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former President Donald Trump, and senators such as Ed Markey have repeatedly raised his case with Chinese leadership, but Beijing maintains it is following its law and has taken no step toward release. The ongoing detentions of Min Zin and Chen illustrate a sustained pattern of Chinese espionage accusations against U.S. citizens, fueling diplomatic friction and concerns over due‑process rights.
