Contract extension negotiations between the Detroit Lions and tight end Sam LaPorta have stalled. Following several weeks of discussions early in the season, LaPorta’s representatives requested a pause in talks to allow the player to focus on his on-field performance. By late October, the situation evolved into a stalemate. LaPorta expressed frustration regarding the lack of progress, stating that the team is “not showing the love” despite his commitment and previous injury history. In a recent appearance on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast, LaPorta voiced significant disappointment over the perceived lack of appreciation for his contributions and the physical risks he has taken, specifically citing a season-ending back injury in 2025 that required surgery. Addressing the potential end of his tenure in Detroit, he stated, “In three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good. I’ll go get paid somewhere else.” Lions head coach Dan Campbell defended LaPorta as an “unselfish teammate” who remains “locked in,” suggesting players sometimes speak out to “get things off their chest.” In October 2026, ahead of a Week 7 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, LaPorta addressed the controversy regarding his previous comments. He clarified to reporters that his intention is to remain with the team, explaining that his recent frustration was driven by a desire for stability for his family. He further expressed regret for any potential distraction his comments may have caused his teammates and coaches.
