Deutsche Bahn is reintroducing a permanent ‘Familienticket’ (family ticket) effective November 1, following a successful trial period during the summer holidays. The ticket is priced at 99.99 euros for a round trip and includes seat reservations for up to five people, specifically covering a maximum of two adults (defined as those aged 15 or older) and up to three children. The ticket is valid for nationwide second-class travel on long-distance trains, though travelers are restricted to their specific booked train and availability is subject to quotas. While local transport to stations may require additional fees, Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger expressed approval of the offer, noting the company’s autonomy in corporate decisions. According to Bahn executive Evelyn Palla, sales for this permanent offering are scheduled to begin on October 26. This pricing update comes as Deutsche Bahn faces ongoing infrastructure challenges. CEO Evelyn Palla has cautioned that modernizing the aging network will be a process lasting at least ten years, noting that improvements in punctuality will not occur quickly. Concurrently, DB InfraGo is planning to request an average increase of 7.9 percent in track access charges for 2027, with freight traffic expected to see the highest rise at 12.9 percent.
