Deutsche Post postage rate increases and service changes for 2027

Deutsche Post has detailed its plans for significant postage rate increases and structural service changes scheduled for January 1, 2027, pending approval from the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur). The company proposes raising the price of a standard letter from 95 cents to 1.15 euros, a hike of approximately 21 percent. Nikola Hagleitner, board member for Post and Parcel Germany, described these increases as “unvermeidbar” (unavoidable), citing a long-term decline in mail volume—which dropped from 16.9 billion items in 2005 to approximately 9.4 billion in 2025—alongside rising personnel, energy, and material costs. The company emphasized the necessity of maintaining a nationwide network of branches and mailboxes despite shrinking volumes. Beyond standard letters, several other mail products are slated for price hikes: postcards will rise to 1.15 euros, compact letters (up to 50g) to 1.25 euros, large letters to 2.35 euros, and maxi letters to 5 euros. International standard letters are expected to cost 1.45 euros. Additionally, the company is seeking permission to increase prices for private customer parcels by nearly 11 percent. New structural changes aim to better distinguish between documents and goods. Standard letters will be limited to a height of 0.5 cm, while compact letters will be limited to 1 cm. Large letters will expand to a height of 3 cm and a weight of 1 kg. For domestic parcels weighing up to one kilogram, tracking and liability up to 20 euros will be automatically included. Parallel to these pricing changes, the Deutsche Post works council continues to warn against proposed reforms to the Postal Act. Works council Act, with leader Yusuf Özdemir has expressed expressing concern to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs that removing tax privileges for business letters—thereby subjecting them to VAT—could letters could jeopardize the stability of the company stability and the jobs of approximately 180,000 employees. jobs.
