Development of early dementia detection tools

Overview

Researchers are developing new tools for the early detection of cognitive decline and dementia.

At Flinders University, neuroscientists developed the Spatial Navigation and Memory (SPAM) Questionnaire. This tool focuses on spatial navigation and memory function to identify subtle changes that often precede significant memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease. In a study of 940 older adults, the questionnaire proved effective at capturing perceived changes over both a lifetime and a three-month period.

In the Czech Republic, cyberneticists at the University of West Bohemia introduced DigiDiaDem, a web application designed to detect early signs of Alzheimer's and frontotemporal dementia. The application uses auditory and visual tasks, speech recognition, and memory assessments to provide a screening report. During testing with over 4,000 participants, the system recommended that 15 percent of users seek medical consultation. While not a definitive clinical diagnosis, the tool serves as an early warning system to facilitate consultations with general practitioners.
