An international research team, led by the US-based City of Hope, has developed PANXEON, an experimental liquid biopsy blood test designed for the early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Published in the journal Nature Medicine, the study involved nearly 1,800 participants across the United States, Europe, and Asia. The technology utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze a combination of biomarkers, specifically circulating microRNA, exosomal microRNA, and the CA19-9 (or CA 10-9) protein. This combination allows for a more comprehensive risk score than single-biomarker tests. In clinical testing, the method identified stage 1 and stage 2 pancreatic cancers with approximately 87% accuracy. The test also demonstrated the ability to detect high-grade dysplasia, a precancerous condition, in over 64% of cases. Researchers reported a false positive rate of 3% among low-risk groups and 16% among high-risk groups. The test is intended to serve as a noninvasive complement to current imaging methods, helping to identify high-risk individuals who may require more intensive surveillance or intervention. This innovation aims to transform the management of pancreatic adenocarcinoma, a disease often diagnosed too late for effective treatment.
