Researchers from Ohio State University and Zhejiang Laboratory have developed ‘Scentronic’, an AI-powered system designed to detect, transmit, and recreate odors remotely via the internet. The technology employs an electronic nose with gas sensors to identify chemical compounds, which are then processed by machine-learning models. Instead of transmitting physical molecules, the system sends digital instructions to a receiving device that uses preloaded scented liquids and miniature atomizers to release droplets. In laboratory tests, tests involving 14 volunteers, participants identified recreated scents such as coffee, beer, red wine, cake, and orange with orange. The accuracy rate for single scents was approximately 73% accuracy. 73%, while combinations of two scents reached 71%. While the current prototype recognizes broad scent families rather than specific nuances, researchers have also incorporated a digital cup using water and flavoring liquids to simulate taste. Potential applications for the technology include enhancing virtual reality, improving digital communication, online shopping for perfumes or food, and medical assessments for olfactory disorders. Future development aims to improve precision, reduce costs, and address safety and size constraints. The team has also explored wearable versions of the scent generator, such as wristbands and necklaces.
