Diabetes management and support in Greece
Overview
Recent data indicates that diabetes affects more than one in ten citizens in Greece. Approximately 1.23 million people live with Type 2 diabetes, while roughly 49,000 are recorded with Type 1 diabetes, a chronic autoimmune disease requiring lifelong insulin administration.
Challenges have emerged regarding the care of children with Type 1 diabetes in municipal nurseries and preschools. The Panhellenic Federation of Diabetes Associations (POSSASDIA) reports that a lack of nursing staff to administer insulin and perform monitoring forces families to either withdraw children from these institutions or pay for private support.
In response, the parent organization ESAMEA has submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Interior. The proposal seeks a nationwide nursing support framework, including mandatory minimum staffing requirements and the establishment of a registry to track nursing levels in municipal nurseries.
