Dietary impacts on medication efficacy

Overview

Health experts and pharmacists have highlighted various ways in which food and drink consumption can alter the effectiveness of pharmaceutical treatments.

In Germany, the Consumer Advice Center of Rhineland-Palatinate issued a warning regarding grapefruit. The fruit contains substances that inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme, which is necessary for processing many drugs. This inhibition can cause medications for cholesterol, blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, and certain cancers to become either too strong or too weak. Experts noted that even a single glass of juice can trigger these effects, and the metabolic influence can persist for several days.

In Poland, discussions at the II Senior Forum focused on broader dietary interactions. It was noted that paracetamol is most effective on an empty stomach, while non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or aspirin should be taken with food. Other specific interactions include vitamin K in green vegetables interfering with anticoagulants like warfarin, and high-fiber foods potentially reducing the absorption of digoxin. Additionally, while fat-soluble vitamins require dietary fat for absorption, fat may delay the action of sildenafil.
