Dillon Brooks contract extension with Phoenix Suns

The Phoenix Suns have signed veteran forward Dillon Brooks to a fully guaranteed three-year, $73 million contract extension, keeping him with the franchise through the 2029-30 NBA season. The deal was negotiated by Brooks’ agent, Mike George of Klutch Sports, alongside Suns CEO Josh Bartelstein, general manager Brian Gregory, and owner Mat Ishbia.

Brooks, a 30-year-old Canadian who joined Phoenix via the Kevin Durant trade, follows a career-high season where he averaged 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. His defensive impact helped the Suns improve from 27th to ninth in league defensive rankings, contributing to a surprise playoff appearance where he averaged 26 points in the first round. Coach Jordan Ott has identified Brooks as a vital component of the team’s hard-nosed culture.

To secure the extension, the Suns utilized the Larry Bird exception, despite being significantly over the NBA salary cap and the second financial apron. While the move solidifies a core that includes Devin Booker and recent acquisitions Miles Bridges and Luke Kennard, analysts have expressed concerns regarding the team’s financial flexibility due to concentrated high-cost contracts.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Brooks has noted his evolution from a provocateur to a team leader. He has also faced public challenges from Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who stated an intention to “give Dillon Brooks belt” during their matchups.
