Diplomatic addresses at the 81st UN General Assembly

Overview

During the 81st UN General Assembly, leaders from Portugal and Cabo Verde addressed various global challenges. Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro spoke on the energy crisis, describing rising fuel prices as ‘collective masochism’ and proposing reforms to international oil price mechanisms. He also advocated for UN Security Council reforms to increase representation for Africa, Brazil, and India.

Cabo Verdean Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho focused on the climate crisis, framing it as a matter of justice. He highlighted the immediate threats faced by small island states, such as droughts, ocean acidification, and rising sea levels. Carvalho specifically cited the impact of tropical storm Gonzalo, which caused flooding and power outages across the archipelago, arguing that those least responsible for the crisis should not bear its most severe consequences.
