Diplomatic role of U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria and Iraq, Tom Barrack, initially faced significant political pressure following controversial remarks regarding the Golan Heights. During a podcast interview, Barrack stated that Israel’s presence in the Golan Heights violates UN resolutions, a position that contradicted the official U.S. policy recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the territory. These comments led to calls for his removal from the Zionist Organization of America and criticism from U.S. commentators who accused him of prioritizing Turkish interests.

Despite the controversy, Barrack continued his diplomatic activities in the region. In early September, he conducted high-level meetings in Turkey, including discussions with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. These meetings, which also involved Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabban, focused on regional security and post-war architecture in the Middle East. Following his discussions with President Erdoğan, Barrack emphasized the strength of the U.S.-Turkey alliance, describing the nations as NATO allies and friends.
