Disappearance of Greek monk in Turkey
Overview
Nikolaos Tsigozis, a 58-year-old Greek Orthodox monk known as Joseph, has been missing in Turkey since late July. He reportedly left Greece with the intention of visiting Pontus and Cappadocia to reconnect with his ancestral roots.
Evidence suggests he entered Turkey around July 23, and the Greek Consulate in Istanbul confirmed that a man matching his description visited the consulate on July 25 to inquire about travel to Trabzon. Despite these leads, he has not been heard from for several months. His family has engaged Interpol and Greek authorities to request searches in his intended destinations.
The case has escalated to the Turkish Parliament, where lawmaker Serhat Eren of the DEM Party submitted a parliamentary inquiry to Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi. The inquiry seeks information regarding search and rescue operations, the identification of digital or physical travel traces, and whether authorities in Trabzon and Cappadocia are coordinating with the Greek consulate and the monk’s family to inspect historical religious sites.
