Discovery of 1864 shipwreck off Dover
Overview
Belgian diver Stefan Panis and colleague Eddie Houzi discovered the wreck of the wooden sailing ship Mindoro off the coast of Dover, England. The vessel sank in 1864 following a collision while transporting colonial cargo and supplies for a British army regiment en route to Vancouver.
The discovery includes a cache of approximately 20 to 24 glass bottles bearing the Guinness logo. Researchers believe the contents may have been preserved by the high pressure, lack of light, and low temperatures of approximately 4°C at the wreck site. Scientists are currently investigating whether the beer remains potable or if seawater has penetrated the corks.
In response to the find, microbiologists from KU Leuven University in Belgium have launched ‘Project Jurassic Beer’. The team is analyzing samples to potentially recover complete DNA from the yeast, which could allow for a small-scale recreation of the exact 1864 recipe. While experts caution that the original flavor may be a ‘moving target’ due to the presence of live yeast, researchers are collaborating with Guinness archives to identify the specific ingredients and processes used during that era.
