Discovery of ancient almond tree in Sicily

Overview

Botanists have identified what is believed to be the world’s largest living bitter almond tree in the Sicani Mountains of Sicily, near Castronovo di Sicilia. Located at an altitude of 910 meters, the specimen stands 10 meters tall with a crown diameter of 15 meters and a trunk circumference of 5.2 meters.

Research published in the journal ‘Quaderni di Botanica Ambientale e Applicata’ by botanists Pasquale Marino and Francesco Maria Raimondo estimates the tree is approximately 500 years old, significantly exceeding the typical lifespan of 70 to 80 years for the species. The tree features a unique spiral trunk and has integrated an old wooden ladder and metal wires into its structure over several decades.

The measurements of this specimen reportedly exceed those of the 39 monumental almond trees currently listed in the international registry of monumental trees.
