Discovery of exoplanets surviving red giant expansion
Overview
A research team led by Professor Qian Shengbang from Yunnan University has identified three exoplanets, named 24 Boo b, HD 12648 b, and TYC 4282-605 1 b, that have survived the red giant phase of their host stars.
According to findings published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), these planets remain in their orbits despite proximity to stars that have expanded and entered the helium-burning red clump stage. Current astronomical models suggest such planets should have been swallowed by the expanding stellar atmospheres or pulled into the stars by tidal forces.
The study utilized satellite data and stellar asteroseismology to analyze changes in stellar brightness, confirming the host stars have already passed the red giant stage. The survival of these celestial bodies challenges existing scientific models regarding stellar evolution and the potential future fate of planets like Earth.
