Discovery of Timpanogos rock glacier ice volume
Overview
Researchers from the University of Utah and the Utah Geological Survey have mapped a hidden rock glacier beneath Mount Timpanogos. Because rock glaciers are insulated by thick layers of debris, the team utilized a novel technique involving gravity measurements to distinguish between high-density rock and lower-density ice.
The study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, determined that the glacier is composed of approximately 83 percent ice and 17 percent surface rock, with an ice core estimated to be between 30 and 45 meters thick. The findings reveal a massive ice volume of approximately 1.5 million cubic meters, which is equivalent to the amount of water needed to fill 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Beyond the local discovery, the researchers developed a formula to estimate global rock glacier water content, suggesting that approximately 48 billion tons of water are locked in such formations worldwide.
