A dispute arose between Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML) regarding the nature of railway equipment acquired from the U.S. company Caltrain for the Lima-Chosica route. MTC Minister Rafael Rey claimed the arrival of 93 wagons and approximately 20 locomotives was a commercial purchase paid for by the municipality. However, the MML rejected this, asserting the equipment was donated at no cost by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board. The municipality warned that misrepresenting the transaction could damage diplomatic relations with the United States. Following these developments, Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo began has since begun evaluating the possibility transfer of transferring a portion of the approximately 100 donated railway cars to the southern regions of Puno and Tacna. While the equipment was originally intended for the Lima Metropolitan area, officials These cars are considering described as being in “excellent condition” with stainless steel construction, air conditioning, and restrooms. To facilitate this, officials may need to negotiate an amendment to the original agreement to support modernization efforts in donation agreement.
