DOCa Rioja market and viticulture developments

Overview

The Rioja Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa Rioja) has undertaken efforts to expand its market presence and formalize its viticultural distinctions.

In Madrid, the organization launched the ‘Rioja es muy de Madrid’ campaign, a series of over 200 activities across 130 establishments intended to integrate Rioja wines into the capital’s gastronomic traditions. The initiative aims to connect various wine styles with local social rituals, following a significant market performance in 2025 where approximately 15 million bottles were sold in the Madrid metropolitan area.

Simultaneously, Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food officially recognized three new ‘singular vineyards’ within the DOCa Rioja denomination. Located in La Rioja and the province of Álava, these vineyards must meet strict criteria regarding age, yield limits, and manual harvesting to receive the designation. This recognition brings the total number of singular vineyards in the region to 167 since 2019.
