Former Bafana Bafana midfielder and Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has been appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Committee. The appointment was made by SAFA President Danny Jordaan following a National Executive Committee meeting in Sandton. Khumalo will serve alongside chairperson Jack Maluleke. His role involves contributing to coaching appointments, reviewing training methods, and assisting in the development of South Africa’s national teams. Following the announcement, Khumalo visited the Kaizer Chiefs headquarters to meet with chairman Dr Kaizer Motaung, the coaching staff, and players. Dr Motaung noted that Khumalo’s extensive career as a player and coach will bring “significant knowledge” to the SAFA structures. Further details regarding his mandate indicate that Khumalo will play a significant role in recommending and appointing coaches for all national teams, from the senior Bafana Bafana squad to junior levels. His responsibilities extend to assisting with scouting, suggesting emerging talent to junior coaches, and attending regional tournaments. Additionally, Khumalo is expected to work with technical director Molefi Ntseki to communicate SAFA’s development programmes, specifically at the grassroots level, including advising on coaching seminars, clinics, and licensing. Former Bafana Bafana coach Augusto Palacios has expressed support for the appointment, citing Khumalo’s extensive experience at both club and international levels.
