The research also noted that approaching a dog from the side enhances its comfort.
A follow‑up study reported on 26 July 2026 showed that dogs’ heart rates rise markedly when they hear owners say “I love you,” but drop when they receive hugs, indicating that verbal and physical affection both produce measurable physiological effects. The same work highlighted oxytocin release in both dogs and cats during eye contact, petting and, for cats, purring, and emphasized that consent is important for felines because forced contact can lower oxytocin levels.
Together, the findings broaden understanding of how different forms of human affection influence the emotional and physiological states of companion animals.
