Man arrested for attempted murder in Cattolica car plunge

Overview

On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 19, a 45-year-old Albanian man, identified as Ismail Picari, drove a Volkswagen Golf into the canal port of Cattolica, Italy, with his 42-year-old wife inside following a violent argument.

Investigators believe Picari lured his wife into the vehicle under the pretext of going grocery shopping. Upon reaching the port, he reportedly accelerated toward the sea, striking a pole before the vehicle plunged into approximately three meters of water. The man exited the vehicle first, while the woman became trapped, eventually escaping by breaking the rear window. Witnesses, including fishermen and passersby, used a rope from the pier to pull the couple to safety. The wife was transported to a hospital in Pesaro for medical evaluation and is reported to be in stable condition.

Following the incident, Picari fled through a rocky area but was later located and detained by the Carabinieri hiding in a wooded area near his home in San Giovanni in Marignano. He has been arrested for attempted murder, as investigators believe the plunge was a deliberate, premeditated act of revenge. This incident follows a domestic dispute the previous night, during which the man had been arrested for resisting public officials but had subsequently been released.
