The Colegio Médico Dominicano (CMD) has initiated a series of labor actions to address professional and systemic grievances in the Dominican Republic. In October, the CMD called for a 24-hour national strike to demand seniority incentives, payment for specific shifts, the creation of new job positions, and adherence to labor hour agreements. The union also cited concerns regarding hospital security and the management of infrastructure projects at facilities such as the Salvador B. Gautier and Padre Billini hospitals. By November, the CMD announced a subsequent 24-hour strike scheduled for November 4. CMD president Luis Peña Núñez stated that the medical sector has spent approximately ten months attempting to establish an effective dialogue with government authorities, including the Ministry of Public Health, without success. In addition to the labor suspension, the organization planned a national march for November 11, intended to proceed from the Maternidad Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia to the National Palace to demand a formal space for dialogue with the Executive Power. On November 3, the CMD suspended the planned November 4 strike and the November 11 march. This decision followed an invitation from President Luis Abinader to hold a meeting on the following Thursday at 3:00 p.m. to discuss the sector's demands. CMD President Luis Alberto Peña Núñez stated that these negotiations aim to reach a pact benefiting both medical professionals and the public. The discussions are expected to involve various ministries to address issues including seniority incentives, remuneration for in-person shifts, hospital infrastructure at the Juan Pablo Pina and Padre Billini hospitals, medical unemployment, and sanitary services in provinces such as Santiago Rodríguez, Puerto Plata, and La Romana. During these actions, the CMD has maintained that emergency rooms and intensive care units will remain operational to ensure patient safety.
