Dominican Republic agricultural debt protests
Overview
Agricultural producers and machinery owners in San Juan de la Maguana and Elías Piña initiated protests against the Dominican government, demanding the settlement of debts estimated between RD$500 million and RD$550 million. The arrears, some dating back to 2021, involve services provided to the Ministry of Agriculture, such as land preparation and the sale of beans and onions.
Protesters utilized over 200 tractors to block major transit routes, including the Sánchez highway, causing significant congestion. During the unrest, the National Police detained five agricultural leaders. Following overnight negotiations, a 15-day truce was established, during which protesters agreed to clear the roads while awaiting government action.
Political figures have since intensified calls for immediate payment. Adriano Sánchez Roa, Secretary of Agricultural Affairs for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), specified a debt breakdown of RD$205 million for onion producers, RD$210 million for bean farmers, and RD$95 million for equipment owners. Sánchez Roa warned that the lack of liquidity prevents farmers from purchasing essential supplies like seeds and fertilizers, which could increase the nation's reliance on bean imports.
