The Dominican Republic has initiated a series of infrastructure projects to strengthen border security and territorial control along the frontier with Haiti. In late August, the Ministry of Defense and the Border Development Foundation (FUNDEFRO) inaugurated new military installations in the Jimaní region. These include two triangular-designed military forts, known as ‘Tetraedros’, with work on a third facility underway. Following these installations, the government commenced the second stage of a border fortification initiative in the Independencia province. Under the ‘Frontera Fuerte’ (Strong Border) strategy, the Ministry of Defense (MIDE) has ~~launched~~ begun the construction of a 14.5-kilometer perimeter fence in Jimaní. This structure ~~will~~ is designed to stand 13 feet high and ~~includes~~ will include six surveillance towers, 35 culverts, and seven-meter-wide patrol roads on both sides of the fence to improve military mobility and response times. The project is strategically located in the Hoya de Enriquillo, near Lake Azuey, an area historically prone to the irregular movement of goods and other illicit activities. The initiative is intended to bolster the oversight capabilities of the Dominican Army and the Specialized Border Security Corps (Cesfront). This integrated plan by the administration of President Luis Abinader combines physical infrastructure with increased military presence, technology, and surveillance to manage the border and organize binational trade.
