Dominican Republic Foreign Minister Víctor ‘Ito’ Bisonó conducted an official visit to Canada to mark the 72nd anniversary of diplomatic relations. The visit, which included stops in Ottawa and Toronto, aimed to strengthen political dialogue and expand economic cooperation through ‘economic diplomacy.’ Discussions between Dominican and Canadian officials focused on strategic sectors such as critical minerals, energy, logistics, and responsible mining. A cooperation agreement regarding aviation security was signed, and regional stability in Haiti was addressed. Following the initial diplomatic meetings, efforts shifted toward diversifying economic ties. During the Toronto Global Forum 2026, Minister Bisonó proposed expanding cooperation into high-value sectors, including advanced manufacturing, medical devices, aerospace, and digital technologies. To facilitate this, an agreement was reached with Ontario Premier Doug Ford to organize a commercial mission to the Dominican Republic in the first quarter of 2027, intended to connect Ontario’s industrial sector with Dominican enterprises. This push for diversification comes as Canada maintains its position as the second-largest source of foreign direct investment in the Dominican Republic, with an accumulated total of US$6.107 billion recorded between 2010 and 2025. The upcoming 2027 mission aims to connect Ontario-based businesses with Dominican opportunities in energy, mining, and financial services, while also seeking to increase the export of Dominican products, such as rum and cigars, to the Ontario market.
