Overview

The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) is implementing the ‘Cocinas Limpias’ (Clean Kitchens) program to transition vulnerable households from solid fuels, such as firewood and charcoal, to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

In August 2026, the program distributed 125 kits in the Bahoruco province, specifically targeting communities within the Neiba municipality. This sixth delivery brought the total number of assisted families to 725. The kits include a four-burner tabletop stove, an LPG cylinder, and installation accessories.

By September 2026, the initiative expanded to the María Trinidad Sánchez province, providing kits to an additional 100 households. This expansion increased the total number of beneficiaries to 825. In addition to equipment, the program provides technical training on safety and maintenance. Vladímir Ozorio, Director of Social and Community Management, stated the initiative aims to improve community health and safety by reducing respiratory issues and fire risks, noting the effort brings ‘health and dignity’ to beneficiaries.
