The Dominican Republic’s Public Ministry is pursuing multiple high-level corruption investigations involving former officials. In one case, former prosecutor Aurelio Valdez Alcántara has been indicted for allegedly using his position to extort bribes. The allegations include bribery, money laundering, fraudulent contracting, and the use of shell companies to acquire luxury assets like a villa and a yacht. Recent developments in the Rodríguez Sánchez case show that prosecutors have expanded their claims to 34 lines of imputation. These include allegations of document falsification and the systematic destruction of public procurement archives in 2020. The prosecution asserts the network used shell companies and social media propaganda to build political careers and accumulate illicit wealth. Rodríguez Sánchez’s legal team, led by attorney Carlos Balcácer, has categorically denied claims regarding potential plea negotiations. The defense has requested the court to declare the extinction of the criminal action, arguing that the legal time limit for the proceedings has expired due to investigative delays attributed to the prosecution.
