The Dominican Republic has introduced several educational and tourism initiatives. In late August, the Asociación Popular de Ahorros y Préstamos (APAP) launched the ‘Somos Formación Continua’ program, which offers 500 scholarships for specialized diplomas in fields such as cybersecurity, data analysis, and business management through various academic institutions. Following this, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCyT) announced a larger initiative to provide 10,000 excellence scholarships to high school graduates. This program is designed to integrate pre-university and higher education systems, specifically targeting students recognized for achievements in STEM, robotics, arts, sports, and leadership, as well as those with high grade point averages. In September 2026, the program officially commenced with Vice President Raquel Peña headlining and Minister Rafael Santos Badía leading the distribution. The initiative, led by MESCyT, consists of 5,000 national scholarships and 5,000 ‘Excellence Without Barriers 2026’ scholarships. The program focuses on strategic disciplines including science, technology, mathematics, physics, agronomy, and the ‘orange economy’. A central component of the rollout is the coordination between the Ministry of Education and MESCyT, which enables the direct connection of high-achieving graduates to higher education opportunities within the same year. To date, 948 students have been identified through their performance in academic olympiads, robotics, STEM, leadership, arts, sports, and by maintaining grade point averages above 95 points.
