The Dominican Republic is managing domestic economic pressures stemming from international fuel market volatility. For the week of September 26 to October 2, 2026, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) initially announced price increases for premium gasoline, regular gasoline, and diesel due to Middle East conflicts and navigation constraints in the Strait of Hormuz. However, for For the first week of October 3 to 9, 2026, the government implemented subsidies to freeze prices for several key energy products. Despite rising international costs for refined products, the MICM maintained stable costs for premium and gasoline (RD$353.10/gal), regular gasoline, gasoline (RD$317.50/gal), optimal and diesel (RD$306.10/gal), regular diesel, diesel (RD$270.80/gal), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), (RD$135.20/gal), and natural gas. gas (RD$43.97/m³). To achieve this, the government allocated RD$1,490.9 million in subsidies for the week, bringing the year-to-date subsidy expenditure to nearly RD$37,000 million. Officials warned that if Middle East conflicts persist, total annual subsidies could reach RD$50,000 million, exceeding original budget projections. While consumer fuels remained unchanged, adjustments were made to other products: avtur and kerosene prices were reduced, while fuel oil #1 and #6 saw increases. This volatility, including rising optimal diesel prices and reduced U.S. refinery capacity, has prompted the Central Bank to raise its monetary policy interest rate from 5.25% to 5.50% to mitigate inflationary risks. To mitigate these costs, the MICM previously held strategic meetings with transport federations, including the ‘G-12’ group. Transport leaders have agreed to maintain current public transportation tariffs for the time being while authorities evaluate compensation mechanisms such as the ‘Bono Gas’ and driver pensions.
