In late July 2026, the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM) announced a freeze on gasoline, diesel, LPG, and natural gas prices for the first week of August. Despite West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices exceeding US$85 per barrel and briefly surpassing US$92, the government implemented a subsidy of RD$1.369 billion for that week. This action brought the total fuel subsidies for 2026 close to RD$25 billion. For the week of August 15 to 21, the MICM announced price increases for regular gasoline and regular diesel, with both rising by RD$3.00 per gallon. This adjustment brought regular gasoline to RD$307.50 and regular diesel to RD$259.80 per gallon. The Ministry noted that while prices increased, they remain below the levels established on June 13 as part of the ‘Plan Anticrisis’. LPG and natural gas prices remained frozen. The Ministry attributed the price shifts to rising refining margins driven by the US-Iran conflict, which increased margins by 26% for gasoline and over 64% for diesel. To mitigate the impact on citizens, the government allocated RD$1,087.9 million in subsidies for the week, bringing the total subsidy amount for the year to over RD$26 billion. Other adjustments included increases in Avtur, kerosene, and fuel oil #6, while fuel oil 1%S saw a decrease. As of mid-August, the Dominican government continues to utilize a multi-billion peso fund to subsidize various fuels. While regular gasoline and diesel prices have experienced slight increases, the government maintains its freeze on LPG and natural gas prices to protect consumers under its anti-crisis plan.
