The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Public Health has initiated a pilot project to implement Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing as a primary screening method for cervical cancer. Currently active in the provinces of Elías Piña and Dajabón, the project is titled ‘Strengthening Primary Maternal and Child Health Care in Dajabón and Elías Piña’. The initiative receives technical and financial support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (Koica) and technical assistance from the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO). The program encompasses a comprehensive scope, including training for clinical clinical, epidemiological, statistical, and supervisory personnel, as well as sample collection, triage, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. It also incorporates practices such as colposcopy and thermal ablation. The long-term objective is to expand this model across the country to support global targets for the elimination of cervical cancer by 2030.
