Dominican Republic law enforcement operations

Overview

Dominican authorities have conducted several operations targeting smuggling, counterfeiting, and financial irregularities.

In one instance, a Colombian national, Mauricio Alberto Ossa Ospina, was placed in preventive detention after being apprehended at Las Américas International Airport. Authorities seized over US$600,000 in undeclared cash, prompting investigations into potential money laundering and customs violations.

In separate raids in Higüey and La Otra Banda, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, alongside other agencies, seized premium cigars and mamajuana valued at over RD$40 million. These operations targeted counterfeiting and illicit trade, resulting in the confiscation of thousands of items and tools used to counterfeit cigar brands. Officials noted these activities contribute to tax evasion and pose health risks.
