The Junta Central Electoral (JCE) in the Dominican Republic has implemented measures to facilitate the renewal of national identity and electoral cards. Initially, the agency focused on localized efforts, such as a three-day mobile identification drive in the Cristo Rey neighborhood of Santo Domingo to provide free services and civil registry assistance to residents. Following these efforts, the JCE announced that the renewal process is now open without restrictions, removing the previous requirement for citizens to wait until their birth month to renew. This change became effective on Friday, August 28, allowing citizens to renew their documents at any time at authorized centers. JCE President Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo reported that 3,066,520 people have received the new identity cards. When including documents in final processing, the total number of processed renewals stands at 3,231,490, representing approximately 37.7% of the 8,569,272 registered voters. The agency marked a milestone when Onaney Rosmel Severino Alcántara became the three-millionth person to receive the new document. The new cards feature enhanced security technology, including high-resistance polycarbonate, laser technology, and a cryptographic chip. Officials warned that the previous card format will no longer be valid for official procedures or legal transactions starting April 1, 2027, and have urged the remaining citizens to complete the process early to avoid civil disability and congestion. Recent updates specify that the new cards include nine layers of fused polycarbonate, laser-engraved personal data, and a QR code. Regarding lost documents, the current cost for a replacement is RD$1,200, as the JCE has not yet finalized specific regulations for the new replacement regime.
