Dominican Republic police use of force

Overview

In early August 2026, a police officer in La Victoria was recorded pointing an electric stun gun at a young man on José Soriano street, an incident described by residents as unprovoked and leaving the victim injured. Local authorities had not yet issued a statement and the case was under investigation.

A few days later, police activity in La Vega escalated into a shooting after a traffic clash between a motorcycle and a jeepeta near a fuel station. The driver of the jeepeta drew a firearm, exchanged fire with a police officer on the motorcycle, and injured officer Darlyn Tineo Jerez. Police arrested Victor Guzmán Toribio, recovered both firearms and the vehicle, and sent the weapons for ballistic analysis. The suspect is to be presented to the public prosecutor.
