The Dominican Republic's poultry sector continues to face conflicting reports regarding its stability. While Pro Consumidor reports that poultry prices have remained stable between RD$79 and RD$84 per pound, industry representatives maintain that a severe economic crisis is unfolding. The National Association of Small and Medium Poultry Producers (Anavip) has requested urgent intervention from President Luis Abinader to address low commercialization prices driven by overproduction and imports. Representing over 300 members, Anavip warns that these conditions threaten farm sustainability and could lead to widespread bankruptcies. The association has also expressed concerns Producers report selling chicken at RD$38 per pound at the farm level, while consumers pay between RD$79 and RD$100 in markets. Industry leaders are currently negotiating for a suspension of import permits, noting that previous state aid has been disproportionately concentrated among intermediaries rather than reaching small-scale producers directly. a 45% increase in chicken imports, primarily from the United States, is driving market prices below production costs. Political criticism from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) highlights a significant gap between plummeting farm-gate prices and high consumer costs. This economic tension exists alongside broader agricultural developments. The Dominican Association of Landowners and Farmers (ADHA) noted that over RD$25,000 million in financing benefited 19,000 producers in 2025. Looking toward 2026, the government has planned a RD$2,000 million investment for fertilizer subsidies, alongside investments in machinery and rural infrastructure. Furthermore, a RD$4,200 million preferential loan program, supported by a US$70 million Japanese financing package, has been announced through the Banco Agrícola to support various strategic crops. The Banco Agrícola has launched a RD$4,000 million fund, supported by a US$70 million Japanese government loan, offering 6% annual interest rates to small and medium producers of strategic crops like grains, fruits, and coffee.
