Following the nationwide earthquake drill on September 8, 2026, which tested the ‘Alerta RD’ system and robotic emergency platforms, the Dominican Republic experienced a series of significant seismic events on September 27, 2026. The day began with a 4.3 magnitude earthquake at 6:07 AM near San Antonio de Guerra in the Santo Domingo province at a depth of approximately 95.7 kilometers. Later in the afternoon, a more intense earthquake struck at 5:49 PM, with reported magnitudes ranging between 5.2 and 5.6. The epicenter was located near Ramón Santana in the San Pedro de Macorís province at a depth of approximately 108 to 113 kilometers. These tremors were felt widely, including in Santo Domingo, Santiago, and parts of the northern coast, as well as in Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands. The activity caused widespread alarm and spontaneous evacuations, including at the Santo Domingo International Book Fair, Plaza Sambil, and the Plaza de la Cultura. While the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE) activated Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDAN) protocols and reported no immediate major structural damage or casualties, the events raised technical concerns regarding the government’s Cell Broadcast emergency alert system. Many citizens reported failing to receive automated notifications on their mobile devices. In response to these reports, the COE clarified that the technology is “still being implemented and is not yet fully operational across all telecommunications providers,” noting that the system must follow specific protocols and indicators before an alert is triggered. Experts have also called for increased structural reviews of public buildings, such as schools and hospitals, to ensure compliance with updated seismic codes. Authorities continue to monitor the region for potential aftershocks, as the activity underscores the country’s location within a highly active tectonic zone.
